NEWBIE DESIGN SOFTWARE ADVICE PLEASE.

Post by keetybwoy »

Hi Everyone,

I've just purchased my first 3D Printer which is a QIDI X-Plus.

I thought it would come with the design software but unfortunately not. I emailed QIDI asking which design software is compatible but no reply.

I have an iMac 21.5 inch, Mid 2011 - Version 10.13.6
Can anyone please advise / suggest a design software which is compatible and user friendly for a novice?

Many thanks :)

Welcome to the world of endless enthusiasm :)

There are several options. I use TinkerCAD which is easy to pick up. Completely free to use:

Thanks Kmxsoft.

TinkerCAD is exactly what I need. Having the tools to do the job is one thing, the other is knowing how to use them which TinkerCAD supplies.

I was preparing myself to spend £200 - £300 on 3D CAD Software, so this is a pleasant surprise :D

Don't spend the money. If you want to try CAD then try FreeCAD which is also no charge. However be warned - here's a world of confusion waiting for you with these options! I've been using 3D printers for several years and having tried CAD options (paid and free) I've never een able to get those working - I always come back to TinkerCAD.

Be aware there is a TinkerCAD forum where you can get excellent advice:

I started with TinkerCAD, then Meshmixer, then tried ZBrush trial.
And then finally landed to Blender3D. And guess what? I had to learn the new CAD software again as they are all different in navigation and short keys.
I would recommend you not to get addicted to TinkerCAD as you will need to learn again something more serious due time anyway. (Don't get me wrong, I still use TinkerCAD but for very basic designs only)

I would recommend to sign up for the course by ptt.live (PrintThatThing)
