Tiny Gears – Testing Proof of Concept

Post by KenW »

Hi all, thought I would share my experiments in anticipation of a larger project with you.

I drew up some gears using the gears workbench add-on in FreeCAD. They’re 12mm outside diameter, 2mm thick, and with a pivot hole 3mm diameter. The plate they’re fitted to has pivot pins printed on it (click through to run video):

I think the teeth could go smaller, especially if I didn’t use the “involute” profile in the gear generator. The main problem I had was the pivot pins tended to snap off the base plate (too small a contact area to get good adhesion).

Brilliant.

Love the moving parts, its a real test on the ability of a 3DP to do fine printing.
